A Custom Environmental Chamber for Pharmacological Research

Introducing a new series of post: #challengeaccepted.

Here’s another example of one such request that we’ve gotten in the past for a completely unique environmental chamber; in this case for use with advanced pharmacological studies, based around an acoustic levitator device from Materials Development, Inc.

Requirements for this special incubation system:

  • Designed to maintain temperature and humidity control around the whole single-axis acoustic levitator device
  • Needed to have heated windows easily openable to insert the sample
  • These heated windows had to allow for multiple imaging techniques and be made with a specialized material, different from standard glass, to avoid interference during IR observations
  • Engineered to prevent entry of significant amounts of humid air or liquid into the acoustic levitator’s transducers
  • Despite the unorthodox shape, dimensions, and complex custom design of this system, we were able to provide the same +/- 0.1°C thermal accuracy and stability as in our standard, off-of-the shelf products

Curious to know more about this application?

Check out this great paper from a group of scientists at the University of Strathclyde.

The capabilities of this platform and the developed methodologies for an in situ characterization have been applied to pharmaceutical formulation model in order to investigate the effect of HPMC on the formation kinetics and the final structure of formulated MET particles during droplet evaporation.
